Greetings, VolcanoHost Clients!

If you have had your email address for any length of time, you are probably already receiving unwanted emails from "spammers".  This problem is made worse if you have your email listed on a website.  The experts all agree on one thing:  Do NOT respond to these spams!  Why not?  Because it just lets them know they have a "live one" and can sell your email to even more spammers.

What can we do about this annoying (and sometimes dangerous) problem?  Simple:  Use Spam Assassin and Spam Box!

What is Spam Assassin?

Spam Assassin is a mail filter installed on our mail servers used to identify spam. It checks for spam using a large number of pre-set rules that check the header, body, and sender of all email messages sent to your domain mailbox.  When an email fails enough of these rules, it will be flagged as potential spam and sent on to your inbox as an email attachment.  You will usually be able to determine if the email is junk or not by reading the Spam Assassin information included with the original email - all without having to open the attachment.  Spam Assassin isn't perfect, but it is a big step in the right direction.  To activate Spam Assassin, login to your control panel and click the Spam Assassin link in the E-mail section.  In most cases, you won't need to do anything other than click the "Enable Spam Assassin" button.  You may want to give Spam Assassin a trial run for a few days before proceeding to the next step...

Spam Box
Spam Box is really nothing more than a special folder to hold all the emails that have been flagged as spam by Spam Assassin.  The best reason to use it is to keep the spams out of your inbox.  It is especially useful if you use Outlook Express to read your email, since it keeps the spams out of your computer altogether1.

To activate Spam Box, click on the Spam Assassin link in the E-mail section of your control panel.  Then click the "Enable SpamBox" button.

You can only access the Spam Box with the Horde webmail interface.  Login to your control panel, click "Webmail", then login to the Horde mail interface.  Click on "Inbox", then click on the drop-down menu in the upper right portion of the screen.  If you have Spam Box enabled and have received any spams, there will be a "spam" folder listed below your Inbox folder.  Note:  You won't see the spam folder until you have actually received some spam emails.  Select the spam folder to view the list of suspicious emails.  You may then select the messages you know are junk and delete them.

If you don't plan on using Horde, then don't enable Spam Box2.  If you don't get that many spams in a week, you probably don't need Spam Box.  But if you get several spams a day, Spam Box can help keep your inbox clutter-free.

1Remember to use your Horde webmail to check and purge the spam messages every few days so they don't cause your account to exceed its disk allotment.

2New: Spambox support via POP3. You can now get your spambox mail by adding "/spam" to the end of your pop3 email login/username.  We still recommend using Horde webmail with Spambox, since Spam Assassin often catches emails containing virus attachments.  Webmail keeps these dangerous emails out of your Outlook Inbox - Admin.
